The pinnacle of the Welsh cultural calendar, The Eistedfodd Festival, will be returning to Monmouthshire and the surrounding area for the first time in over a century in the summer of 2016 bringing with it an economic boost for the region.
The National Eistedfodd is Wales’ leading festival and will take place between the 29th July and the 6th August in 2016. More than 160,000 visitors flock to the festival as Welsh language and culture are celebrated.
The announcement that The Eistedfodd Festival will be held in Monmouthshire for the first time since 1913 has been welcomed by Meet Gateway South Wales.
“To have the leading cultural festival of Wales heading to Monmouthshire is great news for the entire region,” comments Lynne Richards, Tourism Officer at Newport City Council. “The festival brings together music, dance, original performances and the visual arts, and much more besides – it is a true celebration of the beauty of Welsh culture. Naturally, the high footfall of the festival promises a real economic impact for the region, not just through the number of visitors but also through the number of regional businesses who will be involved in making the festival a success. We look forward to hearing more about the festival’s plans over the next 12 months and the positive impact it will have on the region.”
Originally supported by a grant from a regional tourism partnership, the local authorities of Newport, Monmouthshire and Torfaen have joined forces with the aim of generating additional business tourism spend within the region. Through its website, www.meetsouthwales.org.uk, the partnership offers a free objective advisory service for event organisers sourcing venues and accommodation for meetings, conferences and major events as well as an event planning service.
