The Barbican’s green practices have been recognised after being awarded the prestigious ‘Platinum Clean City Award’.
The award recognises outstanding practices in waste management and recycling amongst organisations in the City of London, with only 20 buildings awarded platinum from more than 3,000 applicants.
“We work hard to improve and preserve our green credentials so to receive this recognition is a fantastic achievement for the Barbican,” comments Lee Dobson, Head of Event Management at Barbican Business Events. “A number of high profile buildings and organisations have achieved this award but when you consider the relative age of our building and the challenges we face with operational efficiencies, then it makes the award that much more impressive.”
Several highlights that were instrumental in the judges’ decision making at the Clean City Awards 2014 included:
– Providing recycling opportunities for visiting guests in all public spaces. – Recycling areas in conferencing areas. – Opportunities for staff recycling in back of house areas.
This is not the first time the Barbican has received high merit for its green credentials – with a Gold award in 2008 and the Chairman’s Cup in 2011. The Barbican is also recognised as the only public building with a consistent front and back of house recycling system as well as the innovative idea of introducing recycling bins in areas of their venues which are in keeping with the theme of artwork found in the foyer.
